Could The City – State Concept Succeed In Today’s World?
First, the city-state concept consists of a state that has it’s own government and consists of a city and the area around it. In order to give you an idea of how this works, think back to the midevil times when there were kingdoms ruled by kings. Some examples of ancient city-states are Sparta, Pylos, Athens and several others that is now Greece. Here locally, the Cherokee people lived in several different city-states, rejecting the white man’s laws until the government strong handed them into submitting. This helps explain it more.
There are a few operating city-states presently like Singapore, Hong Kong, Vatican City and Washington D.C. The power that eminates from these places were taken or given because they were expelled from federations or they refused to be ruled by any other giant entity. With their own laws, militaries and authority they operate well despite the issues that could prove problematic and potentially futile.
Having operated in the past and the few city-states that are in operation today hold the possibility of success when applying to the world. This is only a conceptual theory though. In reality, as so proven throughout history there’s always a country that is power hungry, consumed with greed and contempt. There will always be a nation that is bigger that will eventually want to overtake a city-state run population. If there’s something that is wanted badly enough or if that particular tract of land becomes beneficial to the larger nation the reason for the overthrough whether it be commodities or a stratigic commandeering will no longer matter.
In theory, with a few minor adjustments, the city-state concept could work in today’s world but until there is a significant decrease in greed and an increase in people’s common good-will it would be wise for the current city-states to remain vigilant.
